What Is the Equinox Society?

My Dear Strangers,

I received a scorched postcard at my P.O. Box in Troy:

What is the Equinox Society and what is your involvement?

Thus far I have been reluctant to speak directly of my work. No more.

The Equinox Society began at least two centuries ago. What separates us from other secret societies is that we are:

  • Real
  • Not entirely secret

Creepy StoriesConcealment is not a concern because the general public no longer believes in supernatural dangers, disenfleshed spirits, life and death nexuses, &c. Those who believe will find us. The rest will regard the Equinox Society as fiction.

Our purpose is to recognize the strange — to look beyond and see the otherworld around us. The mystery. The threat. The wonder and the horror we have learned to overlook.

Our work is benevolent, but dangerous individuals and splinter groups have always existed.

My initial involvement with the Equinox Society was academic. Two discoveries spurred me to action:

  1. Several members live in my city. They are obsessively private and troubled. I have met none of them in person, and communicated with only one via writing, but I believe they need my help.
  2. A darker faction exists—the brown-clothed stranger may be involved—and must be monitored.

This site is my attempt to contact other members, both here and around the world, not only to dispel my own solitude, but to serve as a friendly beacon for those more alone than myself.

I have begun to identify my allies. I cannot yet identify my enemies, and I fear that by publishing these reports—a necessary risk to strengthen the brighter wing of our society—my enemies already may have identified me.

Being alone in the dark is a common fear. Being alone in the light is sometimes worse.

But I am a field agent now: a man in the mist.

I am here. I am seen.

Look Beyond,
William Rook
